About Sciatica

Sciatica is a term used to describe pain, numbness, weakness, and tingling in a portion of the sciatic nerve. For some, these symptoms extend throughout the entire sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, buttocks, hips, and down each leg. In a majority of cases, a person only has symptoms on one side of his or her body. Some people have reported having a mild aching pain, while others complain of a sharp, burning sensation. It's even possible to have excruciating pain. You might notice the pain worsens when you sneeze or cough. It's possible to have numbness, weakness, or tingling anywhere along the nerve as well.

Causes of Sciatica

In many cases, the sciatica stems from a pinched nerve or bone can excessively grow. It's also possible to experience nerve damage from a condition like diabetes. Some women experience sciatica in the first or third month of pregnancy. You're more at risk if you're older, overweight, live a sedentary lifestyle, or have diabetes. You're also more at risk for sciatica if you work in a job where you carry heavy loads.

Diagnosing Sciatica

Our chiropractor will examine you and check your muscle strength and reflexes. We'll ask you about your symptoms. Additionally, we will request that you go through certain motions, so we see how you move.
